The Shreveport Pirates were part of the Canadian Football League's expansion into the United States in the mid-'90s. It was the first outdoor pro football team to call Shreveport home since the of the old Established in 1994, the Pirates played two seasons in Shreveport's Independence Stadium. Though the Pirates had a strong fan base, and a competitive team, the CFL contracted all of it's U.S.-based teams in 1996.
